Mountain Leader Award Training Week (5 Day)
Mountain Leader (ML) Award is for those who wish to lead others in the mountains, hills, and moorlands of Ireland and the UK, in summer conditions.
Before attending this course, you must have passed the Mountain Skills Assessment (MTBI).
Course Overview
The Mountain Leader scheme is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland. If you love being out in the mountains and want to share your enthusiasm with others, become a Mountain Leader and you’ll never look back. Mountain Leaders operate the length and breadth of the country with all sorts of groups of people, from Scouts and schoolchildren to outdoor instructors and OAPs. The qualification is what you make it and there are countless opportunities for passionate Mountain Leaders.
Programme
Day 1
Course Intro
• Mountain Weather
• Depart for hill and map reading skills
• Risk Management and Leadership
• Evening Introduction to timing and pacing/night nav.
Day 2
• Expedition/ leader equipment
• ML steep ground training
• Incident Management
Day 3
• ML Rope Work
• Steep ground ropework
• Environmental/Leave No Trace
• Exped & route planning
Day 4
Exped including:
• Night navigation
• Hazards and emergencies
• River crossings
• Mountain environment
Day 5
• Exped navigation
• Return & Debrief
What you will Learn
Mountain Leaders should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered, to a greater or lesser extent, during your six-day training course:
• Group management
• Navigation
• Access and the environment
• Hazards (including steep ground and rivers) and emergency procedures
• Equipment
• Expedition skills
• Weather
• Background knowledge
Detailed information on each of the above topics can be found in the Mountain Leader Handbook and the onus is on you to be competent in all of them by the time you come to assessment.
Is this course for me?
Important Information before booking this course.
1. Before attending this course you must first have registered on the Mountain Leader Scheme with Mountain Training Board Ireland or with Mountain Training UKI
2. Passes Mountain Skills Assessment
3. Be a member of one of the three mountaineering councils e.g. Mountaineering Ireland.
4. You must also ensure you have fulfilled any of the pre-requisites as indicated in the MTBI Syllabus. This includes a minimum of 20 personal quality mountain days on the hills of the UK and Ireland.
Students should be reasonably fit and prepared for 5 days on the hill including an overnight camp and a number of evening sessions.

Accommodation in a shared twin room ensuite is included in course
fee. Single occupancy may be available on request at an additional charge.

All in-course meals, snacks, tea & coffee are included.
