Next Step Night Navigation

Night and darkness are a unique time to travel in the mountains and experience the mountain environment, the night sky and look down on the lights in the lowlands. Learn the skills to begin your own journeys in this environment.

Course Overview

Who turned the lights out?

Don’t panic all under control. Many hill walkers get stressed as mist rolls in, the light starts to drop, and they are running late. You shouldn’t need to, navigating in the dark or in poor visibility can be challenging but lots of fun. The same principles apply as when you have good visibility, but tactics and equipment vary a little. Out on the open mountain at night is a unique experience and not to be missed because you feel your navigation is not up to it. Yet!

Programme

19.00 - 23.00

This is a pretty much straight out the door type of course. We expect you to come prepared and ready to hit the hills.

We will cover a bit of ground and weather permitting gain some height to get a perspective of the mountains and night sky.

All the while we will be learning, tuning and tweaking our navigation skills for the night environment.

What you will Learn

You will learn to get organised and pack your kit in a way that works in darkness.

You will see the benefits of a good head torch, compass and map.

We will see how it feels to navigate with limited vision and how these impacts on our choice of navigation legs and technique.

Navigating at night is an excellent way to build your confidence for navigating in tough conditions in daylight.

You have the benefit of our highly motivated and experienced instructors to guide you safely through the process of becoming a better and more confident navigator in the hills.
