First Step Navigation Skills
This is a gentle introduction to becoming a more independent hill walker and the use of a map to navigate in the hills and countryside.
Course Overview
If you are new to hill walking or maybe you have let someone else do the navigation, then step up and grasp the basics. This course will give a gentle introduction to navigation skills to help find their way around the hills.
This First Step Navigating Skills course will be based in the Mourne Mountains on low level mountain and hill terrain.
Programme
09.15 - 17.00
This is mainly hill based course with a short introduction to the map in the classroom and a quick kit check before leaving for the hill. On the hill we will spend time on the following:
• Scale/distance
• Landscape features
• Orientating the map
• Timing
• Route choice
• Planning a navigation leg
• Kit and equipment
What you will Learn
After a short session in the classroom to discuss the basics including kit & equipment, maps, scale and measuring distance we will spend the remainder of the day out on the hill looking at features on the map and landscape, contours, measuring distance on the ground and planning a navigation leg before returning to Tollymore for a debrief and coffee.
Is this course for me?
No previous experience required for this First Step Navigation Skills course, just a very basic level of fitness for a gentle day’s walking on the hill on tracks and across open / rough countryside
What Equipment do I need to bring?
Bring any of your own personal outdoor clothing and kit such as:
• Waterproof Jacket and trousers*
• Boots* or walking shoes
• Warm layers
• Fleece Jacket
• Hat & Gloves
• Head torch*
• Flask & water bottle
• 40L rucksack & liner*
• First Aid kit
• Notebook and pencil
