Next Step Navigation Skills

This course is a mixture of classroom and outdoor discovery and is full of practical tips on becoming a more knowledgeable and competent navigator.

 

Course Overview

This is a solid introduction to the art of navigation. Over the day your eyes will be opened to the wealth of detail out there on the hill and on the map.

Our very experienced instructors will give you the benefit of years of experience operating in a range of interesting and sometimes hostile environments.

 

Programme

09.15 - 17.00

The initial part of the morning will be classroom based learning the details of the map and compass with plenty of questions and discussion.

The remainder of the day will be on the hill putting everything into practice on a range of terrain.

 

What you will Learn

Amongst many more subtle tips and advice we will look in particular at the following areas:

● Contours and feature recognition

● Measuring distance (map & ground)

● Use of pacing and timing to measure distance

● Basic use of the compass (taking & walking on a bearing)

● Planning and walking a navigation leg

● Hazard awareness

● Weather

● Route planning

 

Is this course for me?

If you feel you have some familiarity with reading a map but want to move things up a level with a better depth of understanding this course should work for you. It should leave you with real practical and tactical skills to begin to navigate your way safely more efficiently on the hill.

 

What does the cost include?

• General: Transport, instruction and all specific technical equipment e.g. Boats, paddles, technical clothing. Safety equipment.

What Equipment do I need to bring?

● Bring any of your own personal outdoor clothing and kit such as:

● Waterproof Jacket and trousers*

● Walking Boots*

● Warm layers

● Fleece Jacket

● Hat & Gloves

● Harness and personal climbing equipment*

● Rock shoes*

● Head torch*

● Flask & water bottle

● 40L rucksack & liner*

● First Aid kit

● Notebook and pencil

● Items marked * can be borrowed from TNOC stores
