This qualification is all about supervising safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures.
Course Overview
This qualification is all about supervising safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Whether you're a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, the Rock Climbing Instructor qualification trains and assesses experienced rock climbers to instruct climbing.
Programme
This is a day programme which will cover the wide range of skills and approaches to becoming a Rock climbing Instructor. (note: those who have not completed the Climbing Wall Instructor Training may complete a 3-day RCI Training course)
Evening 1
Introduction to basic belay systems and belaying.
Day 1
• Crag Based
• Personal lead climbing and dealing with basic single pitch problems
• Evening
• Introduction to rigging and set up for group systems.
Day 2
• Crag based
• Mainly focused on group set ups and managing students at the crag.
The 2 days and evenings will include a wide range of practical and theory topics as listed in the scheme handbook.
What you will Learn
Rock Climbing Instructors should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered, to a greater or lesser extent, during your training course.
- Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills, abseiling, background knowledge)
- Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing other staff, managing participants, knowledge and demonstration of techniques)
- Teaching Skills
- The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette and ethics)
- Detailed information on each of the above topics can be found in the Rock Climbing Instructor handbook (below) and the onus is on you to be competent in all of them by the time you come to assessment - use the Skills Checklist to help with this.
Is this course for me?
To get started on the Rock Climbing Instructor qualification you need to meet the following prerequisites:
• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You should be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber.
• You should have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups.
• You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland (you can join one when you register if you're not already a member) - find out why.
If you can meet all of the above requirements, here's what to do next:
• Create an account on our Candidate Management System or log in if you already have one.
• Register for the Rock Climbing Instructor scheme
Before you book onto this Rock Climbing Instructor training course, make sure you have done the following:
• Have completed the CWI training
• You must be registered on the RCI scheme.
• You must be a current member of a mountaineering council
• You must have an up to date logbook (preferably DLOG) with evidence of the following:
- 15 led routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
- 15 led routes at a climbing wall.
- 5 led routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
What Equipment do I need to bring?
Bring any of your own personal outdoor clothing and kit such as:
- Personal rock climbing equipment
- Waterproof Jacket and trousers*
- Boots* or walking shoes
- Warm layers
- Fleece Jacket
- Hat & Gloves
- Head torch*
- Flask & water bottle
- 40L rucksack & liner*
- First Aid kit
- Notebook and pencil
